Re: Notice of COVID-19 Outbreak at OPK School

The Leadership of BCNEA and OPK School received information that we currently have FOUR confirmed cases at OPK School. These four confirmed cases move us from “Alert” status to “Outbreak” status. We have conducted our internal contact tracing and any close contacts will receive a phone call and a follow up letter in the mail.

Due to the outbreak status we will be suspended in school classes for the week of March 15 - 19. On-line and at home learning will continue and our teachers will continue to have access to the school as long as they are not a close contact.

  • Monday will be a deep clean of the building and no staff or students will be in the building.

  • Tuesday at home learning packages will go home for those who do not have on-line or internet connectivity.

  • Cohort A and Cohort B will not attend in person classes but will be expected to complete the week's work at home. Teachers will be working to support their students.

  • Staff will return in class on March 22, Cohort A on March 23 and Cohort B on March 25.

  • BCNEA will continue to work with the Board of Directors, ISC, AHS and Bigstone Health Authority to ensure appropriate communication surrounding this outbreak.

Important Information about Covid - 19 :

The virus is passed from person to person by large, respiratory droplets, like from a cough or sneeze. This means that a person would need to have direct contact with droplets from a sick person or surfaces that they have recently touched. The risk of the general population in the school of becoming infected because of these cases is low.

If staff or students have been identified as a close contact of a confirmed COVID -19 case, the OPK school leadership contacted them directly by phone and by letter as well.

If staff or students have not been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19 but have developed symptoms listed on the daily screen tool, please self isolate at home, complete the on-line assessment tool or call Health Link 811 or your local Health Center as soon as possible to arrange for a COVID -19 test. Please also contact the school administration and inform them you are experiencing symptoms.

To help minimize spread of Covid - 19 we always recommend the following:

  • Be sure everyone in the household handwashes often or uses hand sanitizer.

  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. Cover coughs or sneezes and wash hands after touching tissue.

  • Conduct self assessments daily

  • Stay home if you are sick. If your children are sick keep them home.

  • Sanitized surfaces frequently.

  • Social distance

  • Wear a mask

  • Get the vaccination if you are eligible.

Safety is our top priority and we are continuing to try and mitigate the spread of Covid-19 as best we can. Thank you for your continued understanding and support.

Sincerely,

Chester Auger CEO

Doreen Calliou COO

Charity Alook - Principal Lower

Lisa Thunder - Principal Upper

WE ARE BACK TO IN-SCHOOL LEARNING

Please make sure you follow the appropriate protocol when sending your children to school. If you switching from in-class to @home learning please make sure you call the school so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE DAILY SCREENING QUESTIONAIRE with your child prior to sending them to school.
We would also like to remind you that if Alberta Health Services contact tracers have asked someone in your house to self-isolate we ask that you keep your child at home until the situation is resolved. We recognize that our checklist is more comprehensive than Alberta Health's guidelines but we feel that it is required to remain vigilant at this time.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25 UPDATE 10 PM

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL OPK FAMILIES & STAFF

BCNEA and OPK School would like to provide you with an important update as a result of new information and tightened restrictions that were shared yesterday from the Government of Alberta. Some of the restrictions shared impact schools across the province. We want to inform you about how this new information will impact OPK School.

We will be continuing with our current practice for the next two weeks. OPK School will be deviating slightly from the provincial recommendations. We have determined that we will have an extended Christmas Break that will begin December 12, 2020, and extend to January 11, 2021. This extended break will allow for students to be with their families and limit the possibility of continued spread in the weeks leading up to, during, and after the Christmas Holiday.

OPK School will continue with our current schedule for the next TWO weeks. ALL students will continue with their current school schedule where Cohort A and Cohort B have their two designated days at school and then their three days at home. We will not be moving students to at-home learning for the next two weeks unless it is requested by families to do so. If you wish to have your child stay home for the next two weeks OPK school will ensure that they get an at-home learning package. More information on how to adjust your child's learning schedule will be provided shortly.

Safety has and continues to be the first priority of BCNEA and OPK School. We are proud of the work that our staff has done to keep our school clean and safe. These measures will not just continue but will be enhanced over the next two weeks leading up to the extended break.

OPK Staff wants to thank students, parents, and the community for helping us keep everyone safe! We will get through this together.

More detailed information will be provided in the upcoming days.

Sincerely,

BCNEA Management & OPK Leadership.
