Honouring Elder Gladys Cardinal

Gladys Cardinal served as a matriarch of our Sakaw Cree community, embodying the essence of our language, culture, and traditions. As a Knowledge Keeper, she was a pioneer in First Nation education, a dedicated advocate, a nurturing mother to many, a beloved Kohkom to all, a respected elder, and a foundational pillar of the Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority. Gladys inspired both staff and students to pursue their educational journeys, demonstrating her unwavering belief in their potential. She recognized the unique strengths and gifts of everyone she encountered, generously sharing her knowledge and insights to uplift others in every possible way. Her presence instilled confidence and empowerment in all.

Her words of encouragement acted as a gentle nudge, motivating individuals to believe in themselves and their capabilities. Through mentoring, resource sharing, and simply being a compassionate listener, she cultivated an environment where everyone felt valued and inspired to strive for excellence.

The profound impact she had on colleagues, students, friends, and especially her children and grandchildren will forever be honored as we continue to uphold her passion and commitment to our Cree ways of knowing and being. We carry her spirit in our hearts, and her legacy will endure through each of us.

She will be greatly missed by the entire Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik and Osaw Kihew Kiskinwahamatowikamik community.
