Our foundation ᑕᐻᐦᑕᒧᐏᐣ Tapwehtamowin (Truth)
Defining Tapwehtamowin: Which includes nurturing identity, Sakaw Woodland Cree identity, beliefs, and philosophy (why?)
ᑕᐻᐦᑕᒧᐏᐣ Tapwehtamowin (Truth) is an integral part of our ᑕᐻᐘᑫᐦᑕᒧᐏᐣ tapwewakehtamowin belief system that is based on ᑫᐦᒋ ᐍᔭᓯᐍᐏᐣ Kehci Weyasiwewin (Natural Law). As part of our philosophy, we originated from the Spirit world as spiritual beings, as ᓴᑲᐤ Sakaw (Boreal) ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐘᐠ Nehiyawak (Cree people) Concept of Nehiyaw - four dimensions of being.
We were raised to live out our physical life following ᑫᐦᒋ ᐍᔭᓯᐍᐏᐣ Kehci Weyasiwewin Natural Law.
Natural Law nurtures our ᓂᐢᑕᐍᒧᐍᐏᐣ nistawemowewin (identity) and ᑭᐯᑭᐢᑵᐏᓇᐤ kipekiskwewinaw (our language) as ᓴᑲᐤ Sakaw (Boreal) ᓂᐦᐁᔭᐘᐠ Nehiyawak (Cree people). ᑭᒪᓇᒋᐦᑕᓇᐤ kimanacihtanaw we respect and ᑭᑫᒉᐦᑌᓇᐤ kikehcetenaw honour the ᑕᐻᐦᑕᒧᐏᐣ Tapwehtamowin truth and our ᑕᐻᐘᐦᑕᒧᐏᓇ tapwewakehtamowina (beliefs) that we are connected, interconnected and related to everything that is part of the physical, the environmental, the cosmic and the spiritual world - ᑲᐦᑫᔭᐤ ᑭᐘᐦᑯᒪᑲᓇᐘᐠ kahkeyaw kiwahkomakanawak all our relations.
The "INSTITUTE" is a collection of initiatives that Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority is sponsoring to move forward our mission and vision of keeping the Sakaw way of knowing alive in our community. We invite you to dig into the deeper and contact us if you wish to join in on the movement! 🌟 Coming soon will be detailed program resources in each of the areas 🌟
This program immerses students in the Cree way of life through seasonal survival and navigation skills, bridging the gap between classroom theory and practical land-based experiences. By trading screen time for outdoor problem-solving, students develop a deep environmental connection that directly enhances their mental health and well-being. This impact is best felt at Kapaskwatinak, where the land itself becomes the ultimate teacher.
This program is focused on our early learning students who will be exposed to 'immersion' style of learning with fluent cree speakers and elders in focused, real world language.
We aim to pair fluent speakers with interested staff members across three schools. Participants will commit to a three-month language learning program alongside a fluent speaker.
Keeping our community engaged is essential. Building on significant foundational planning, last year’s engagement session allowed us to share the institute’s mission and vision while unveiling the key areas where we are now taking action. You can "listen in" below - you can hear our language is alive in the conversation that took place in this session!
